What is hydropower?
Hydropower, like other forms of renewable energy, uses a turbine and the water stored in dams to generate electricity.

Pros:
-
It is important to note that hydropower is the country's most affordable and available clean energy.
-
Hydropower relies solely on the power of water. Each state's rivers, streams, and oceans allow each state to produce their own energy, meaning we no longer have to rely on international fuel sources.
-
Hydropower helps with flood control and water supply for communities nearby.
-
Hydropower creates reservoirs that offer a variety of fun "recreational opportunities like fishing, swimming, and boating" (see below).
Cons:
-
It may affect fish and other animal habitats.
-
Power plants are expensive to build.
-
Droughts could affect water availability.

Why does it matter?
As stated above, hydropower is yet another renewable source of energy that can only help our environment. What is special about hydropower? The water that begins to form around the dams is often used as an opportunity for fun family activities that include fishing, swimming, and boating. Larger dams have even become a tourist attraction! These activities are a great way to take advantage of this renewable energy source that does way more than just create energy.
